Karachi : “UN Women and Norwegian Embassy Host Prestigious Award Ceremony Recognizing Champions of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment”

In a collaborative effort between UN Women and the Norwegian Embassy in Pakistan, an impactful event titled “KoiJawaazNahi: Step Up For Gender Equality” was successfully hosted at the Norwegian Ambassador’s Residence in Islamabad. This event marked the culmination of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence Campaign, emphasizing the urgency to address and eliminate violence against women and girls.

The ceremony aimed to recognize and celebrate the champions of gender equality and women’s empowerment, acknowledging the progress made in fulfilling commitments towards these vital goals. Attended by key stakeholders, influencers, and advocates, the gathering facilitated dialogue, idea exchange, and inspired collective action.

Dr. Noor Khan, Acting Head of Mission, highlighted the event’s significance, stating, “The KoiJawaazNahi event serves as a testament to the collective determination to create a world where every woman and girl can live free from violence and discrimination.”

Sharmeela Rassool, the Country Representative of UN Women Pakistan, emphasized the shared responsibility in achieving gender equality. She urged participants to challenge stereotypes, foster inclusion, and empower individuals.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an annual international campaign led by civil society, commenced on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and concluded on December 10, Human Rights Day. This campaign underscores that violence against women is a pervasive breach of human rights worldwide.

As part of its commitment to advance Sustainable Development Goal 5, UN Women launched the StepUpForGenderEquality social media campaign on International Women’s Day. This initiative gathered commitments and pledges from leaders across sectors to participate in the StepUpForGenderEquality challenge, encouraging proactive steps in support of gender equality.

 

In the closing ceremony, a shield for the best performance was awarded to Dr. Syeda Shahida Rehmani, Secretary Women Parliamentary CAUCUS (Former Member National Assembly of Pakistan), recognizing her outstanding contribution to the cause.

This event reinforced the global commitment to creating a world free from gender-based violence and discrimination, urging continued collaboration and action towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.
