ISLAMABAD (TNS) Federal Minister for Information Atta Tarar said that journalist organizations should support the PECA Act law.
In a video statement, Atta Tarar said that journalist organizations should support the PECA Act law, civilized democratic countries also have social media laws, so why is there a protest against it in Pakistan.
He said that when journalists and private sector people are present in the Social Media Authority, Council of Complaints and Tribunal, there is also the right of appeal and writ petition, then what is the fear, then why is it being considered bad?
It should be noted that on January 29, President Asif Zardari signed the PECA Amendment Bill 2025, after which the PECA Act Amendment Bill 2025 has become a law.
On January 23, the National Assembly passed the PECA Act Amendment Bill, while this bill was passed by the Senate on January 28. The Joint Action Committee of journalist organizations had rejected the controversial PECA Amendment Bill.
On Friday, on the call of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), journalist organizations observed Black Day across the country against the passage of the PECA Amendment Act. Journalist organizations held protests in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Sukkur, Kandhkot and Jacobabad, among other cities.
