KARACHI, Sept 06 (TNS): Law enforcement agencies have recorded the statement of family members of the slain suspect in the attack on Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan.
The suspect, identified as Hassaan Israr, along with at least one other suspect, attacked Hassan, the opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly, on Saturday morning as he exited a mosque in the city’s Buffer Zone area after offering Eid prayers.
Hassan remained unhurt in the attack but the firing left his police guard and a bystander child dead. Following the shooting, witnesses grabbed a hold of Hassaan and beat him up. He was later allegedly killed in a police encounter with a single shot to the head.
Hassaan’s family members said they had noticed a change in his attitude since the past year.
Sources said Hassaan used to live in Kaneez Fatima Society with two to three friends. His father’s brother is a police officer and is also being questioned, sources added.
Authorities also claimed to have seized the laptop used to prepare pamphlets of Ansarul Shariah.
On Tuesday, officials of the Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) revealed that Hassaan worked in the university’s electrical engineering department as a lab technician.
He had obtained a BA degree from a local university and his father is a teacher at another university, officials said further.
