SRINAGAR Sept 8 (TNS):  The police today conducted a three-hour long search operation in several villages of Reasi district jammu and Kashmir after several braid-cutting incidents were reported in various parts of the state.

Over three dozen braid-cutting cases have been reported from various parts of the state over the past couple of weeks, causing panic among the people.

“A search operation was carried out under the supervision of senior superintendent of police Reasi Tahir Sajad Bhat in Gran Morh and its adjoining villages. The operation lasted for three hours,” a police spokesperson said.

He said the main objective of the search operation was to identify any suspicious person behind the braid-cutting incidents hiding in the area.

“Since a lot of such incidents have happened over the past 10 days, the operation was undertaken to make the public confident and infuse in them a sense of security,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile villagers in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir were spooked after fourth incident of mysterious braid chopping was reported in Panja chowk locality on Tuesday.

A woman, identified as Mamta Verma, wife of Vinod Kumar, fell unconscious at her home at 7 am today. The family members of Verma said that her braid was chopped mysteriously.

As the news spread in the area, people rushed to her house, triggering panic in the area. The woman was shifted to District Hospital Rajouri for treatment. Three similar incidents have been reported in the district during past few days.

The police said that it was probing into the incidents of women’s braid getting cut off mysteriously in various districts of Jammu region in the state.

According to the police, over 40 incidents of cutting of women’s braids were reported from Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri, Reasi and Udhampur districts in the last two weeks, triggering panic among the people.

Jyoti Devi (24) claimed that her braid was cut when she fainted at her residence in Abra village of Akhnoor and she was hospitalised.

Manisha (22) of Kamala village had similar experience. In Samba district’s Ramgarh tehsil, Rekha’s (25) braid was cut after she fell down and became unconscious. Police officers said that cases have been registered and investigation is going on in all such incidents.

Braid-cutting incidents were reported from various northern states before reaching Jammu and Kashmir.

“We have sent the samples of the hair which were cut under mysterious circumstances for forensic test,” a senior police officer said.  The mysterious chopping of braids of women has reached Bhadarwah district of Jammu and Kashmir, spooking the residents, especially women. Report said that a woman noticed that her braid had been chopped off after she came out of her house for some work in Diggi village on Wednesday.

“The incident happened in Diggi village of Bhadarwah, where a braid of a housewife identified as Murti Devi (30) wife of Ranjeet Singh was chopped off when she was doing some work outside her house,” said SHO Bhadarwah Jatinder Sambyal. He said that they were investigating the matter from all angles.

“We spoke to the victim and her family members but nobody saw anything. The matter is becoming very complicated,” he said. Mysterious incidents of hair chopping were earlier reported from Rajasthan, UP, Delhi, Jammu and Rajouri. The mysterious phenomenon of braid chopping, which has created panic in Jammu region and several areas of northern India, registered its first victim in Kashmir on Tuesday. The police are investigation at least 40 such incidents in several Jammu districts during the past two weeks. In Jammu, the police have sent the samples of chopped braids for forensic screening.
