KARACHI Sept 16 (TNS): Provincial Minister for Education & Literacy Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar has said that Sindh Education Department has taken many initiatives to increase number of female teachers at Primary Schools to attract the students specially girls students to come to school and enjoy a friendly environment of teaching.
There is a dire need to bring about a change in mindset regarding gender discrimination in the society. This he said while addressing as a chief guest in an inauguration ceremony of gender unit in academic and training wing, School Education & Literacy Department, Sindh Secretariat here.
It is to mention here that this gender unit is being established in collaboration with Indus Resource Centre and Oxfam. He told that a number of steps had been taken to attract girls students specially in rural areas and they were being given monthly stipends, free course books and other benefits as well.
Minister for Education Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar lauded the role of International Donor Agencies in spreading education in the province specially in remote areas. He was of the opinion that it was the collective responsibility of the society to respect the women folk of the society and also provide better opportunities of education, health, employment and progress for them. Unless they (women) are taken on board, we cannot make concrete progress. Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar added ‘It is a matter of pleasure that Education Department realizing the importance of gender equity is establishing Gender Unit and it will help reduce the discrimination in this regard.
Earlier Minister Education Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar inaugurated the Gender Unit by cutting the ribbon. While on the occasion Indus Resource Centre given a detailed presentation and CEO of Oxfam also spoke on the occasion and briefed regarding objectives of establishing Gender Unit.
