LAHORE Sept 16 (TNS):   Former captain West Indian captain Darren Sammy snubbed the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chairman during the medal distribution ceremony at the culmination of the 3rd T20 of the Independence Cup at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Sammy was touring with World XI squad to play a three-match T20 series; named as Independence Cup. During the presentation ceremony at the end of the 3rd T20, which Pakistan won by 33 runs, Sammy was standing in the queue of players waiting to get his medal.

However, as soon as he saw that WICB chairman Dav Cameron was handing the medals, he exited the queue to show that the rift wasn’t over and he hasn’t forgotten a bit of whatever happened in the past.

Darren Sammy was the 5th person in line to receive medal from Dave Cameron, but quickly turned around and left line, refused to take medal.

Darren Sammy and his other senior team members were removed from the West Indies T20 team after he led his team to another World Cup win in 2016. Sammy had been vocal about the sorry treatment of WICB towards the players and he spoke about how they didn’t have their kits ready in time for the Word T20 2016. Osman Sammiuddin, a renowned sports journalist and author of the book on Pakistan cricket history, The unquiet ones , was already sensing that the rift was far from over.

WICB and West Indies players had famous rifts on payment issues in the past few years and this has negatively affected the performance of West Indies cricket team. Sammy is the only T20 captain to have won a World T20 tournament twice, and has proven to be a great leader for West Indies in difficult circumstances. Chris Gayle had also refused to play for West Indies due to his contracts with other T20 leagues. Recently, West Indies test batsman Darren Bravo had a twitter spat with the board chairman which led to his dismissal from the test and ODI squad.
