Prices of vegetables refuse to come down

KARACHI OCT 3 (TNS): The prices of vegetables are refusing to come down with tomatoes still retailing for as much as Rs 200 a kilogram.

The prices of almost all other vegetables particularly lime, onions,   garlic, and ginger have registered a sharp rise during the last many weeks peaking to in-affordable levels.

The situation is not any different anywhere in the country.

The tomato prices have continued to rise allacross the country. The tomato prices have crossed double century in Peshawar as they are being sold at Rs 250 per kilogram while people in Karachi are buying them at Rs200 a kilogram.

The vegetable sellers blamed on short crop due to wrong cropping.

The situation has attracted the attention of social media activists who launched a tomato-boycott campaign about a week ago.

Consumers all across the country participated the tomato boycott campaign on social media, followed by  increase in the prices from time to time. People termed price hike as a cruel measure by tomato mafia. Nation has been urged to use yogurt in curries instead of tomatoes.

Despite the tomato boycott campaign which started on September 26 and concluded on September 28 the prices of the basic kitchen item as well as all other vegetables has failed to achieve the desired results of bringing down the prices.
