Pakistan committed to achieve Sustainable Development Goals: vows PM

Islamabad, Oct 11 (TNS): Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi says Pakistan is fully committed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including health under its national health vision.

He was talking to Director General World Health Organization Dr Tedrose Adhanom who called on him in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan looks forward for working closely with the WHO in fighting disease and ensuring equitable provision of health services.

He said Pakistan remains committed to the goal of polio eradication and made significant achievement, which were acknowledged internationally.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said the health reforms initiatives during the last four years under the National Health Program have enabled access of free of cost health facilities to the poor.

He said the country has also witnessed improvement in immunization coverage of children.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan’s improved drug regulatory regime, barcoding of drugs, drug testing and surveillance, which are in line with international standards.

On the occasion, the Director General WHO said the world health body wishes to enhance coordination in helping Pakistan achieve its targets in health sector reforms.

He thanked the Prime Minister and the Government of Pakistan for hosting the 64th session of WHO`s Regional Committee for Eastern Mediterranean.

Minister for National Health Services, Saira Afzal Tarar and officials and delegates of WHO were also present in the meeting.

Member National Assembly Malik Rasheed Ahmad Khan called on Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in Islamabad today.

Matters related to his constituency were discussed during the meeting.
