Nullah Lai still a blot on the face of Rawalpindi

2014

RAWALPINDI, Oct 22 (TNS): Nullah Lai is rain water fed natural stream that flows through twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The catchment has six major tributaries, three originating in the foothills of Islamabad in the higher plain area; it then flows down through the lower lying city of Rawalpindi, where another three tributaries join the river. 11 main drains of Rawalpindi City also contribute to the Nullah.

Negligence on part of successive governments have made it a blot on the face of beautiful Rawalpindi as the concerned departments usually don’t bother to clear the bed of it by scooping out mud, weeds, and rubbish with a dredge.

Due to corruption encroachment on the banks of the nullah has added insult in the injury resulting the shrinking of the nullah with every passing day.

Every year before the commencement of monsoon a formality of dredging and cleanliness Work of Nullah is being done only to show in files that the allocated funds have been used.

Katarian, Dhoke Naju, Pakwari, Dhoke Dalal, Pirwadhai and Ganjmandi Ratta and Gawalmandi are the most vulnerable points that get submerged in water due to floods every year.

Solid waste, mud and big boulders beside sewerage lines of the city always hamper the flow of water which cause inundate low-lying areas with devastating effects.

Densely populated low lying areas along Lai Nullah faced flood like situation On 5th July 2008, with 104mm rainfall received in only 100 minutes caused massive destruction of property and life in Rawalpindi. Three people died in the flash flood. It was the heaviest short period rainfall in last six years, reminding the cloud burst of 23rd July 2001.

Govt is required to take a major step to widen and deepen the nullah and change this blot on the face of city into something which adds beauty.
