KASUR Oct 23 (TNS): Police arrested a man on Monday suspected of attempting to rape a minor girl in Amin Town of Kasur on Sunday.
According to reports, the six years old girl was playing outside her house when the suspect abducted her and took to a deserted place. But the locals immediately rushed to rescue her after spotting the man.
Later, the child’s father and other people of the area went to the house of suspect to register a complaint. This apparently irked the suspect who unleashed his dog on them, leaving three, including an eight-year-old girl, injured.
Two people received minor injuries while the girl had to be hospitalised with serious injuries on her face.
The police arrested the suspect after registering a case against him under different sections of the Pakistan Penal Code.
In July, a local council (panchaiyat) ordered “revenge rape” of 16-year-old girl in Multan, prompting Supreme Court to take notice of the incident.
“A total of 29 people were involved in this ghastly crime.” police had said.
The jirgas and the practice of “revenge rape” drew international attention in 2002 when a woman named Mukhtaran Mai was ordered gang-raped by a local council for a male relative’s alleged crime.
Mai took the rare step of filing criminal charges against her attackers, and six men were convicted and sentenced to death later that year, though five of them were later freed on appeal.
Mai went on to become a high-profile campaigner for women’s rights in Pakistan.
