Islamabad, Dec. 19 (TNS): The Senate on Tuesday passed “The Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2017” by two third majority.

Eighty four members voted in favour of the bill while one member opposed it.

The bill provides allocation of seats in the National Assembly according to the provisional results of the census 2017 without changing the existing total number of general seats and women seats and retaining the share of the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas.

The bill was moved by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmed.

The approval of the bill will reduce nine seats of the National Assembly from Punjab; five from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and three from Balochistan, whereas the federal capital will have one seat increased.

The legislation will not have any effect on the number of seats that Sindh holds in the lower house.

The move will allow delimitation of constituencies on the basis of provisional census results, which was held earlier this year.

The bill couldn’t be adopted earlier due to the absence of lawmakers on four occasions.
