ISLAMABAD Jan 02 (TNS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday acquitted a suspect in a case pertaining to the murder of a five-year old girl after sexual assault.

A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, acquitted the suspect owing to lack of evidence.

Justice Khosa observed that the prosecution has failed to prove charges against the suspect beyond a shadow of doubt.

He noted that legal requirements were not fulfilled while recording the statement of the suspect by a judicial magistrate, whereas the DNA report didn’t also corroborate the charges against him.

According to the police, the suspect had sexually assaulted the minor before murdering her back in 2010 in Karachi.

In 2015, a trial court had awarded capital punishment to the accused in the case.
