Nawaz, Maryam to appear before Accountability Court in Islamabad today

ISLAMABAD, Jan 09 (TNS): Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz will appear before the Accountability Court in Islamabad Today as trial resumed into the corruption references filed against them by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

NAB prosecution will present four new witnesses in Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference. Whereas two other witnesses will record their statement in Flagship and the Avenfield (London) properties cases today. The witnesses will record their statements before the Accountability Judge Mohammad Bashir. The accountability court had summoned six witnesses of Prosecution today.Defence counsel Khawaja Haris will cross-examine the witnesses today. It will be Nawaz Sharif’s 12th, Maryam Nawaz’s 14th and Captain (r) Safdar’s 16th appearance before the court. The court has conducted 19 hearing in Flagship reference, 18 in London flats and 22 hearings in Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.

On January 4,  the Supreme Court had rejected once again former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s plea to club the corruption cases against him.

The former premier had approached the apex court on December 2 seeking another hearing of his plea.Supreme Court (SC) registrar office on Thursday raised objection, rejected appeal, stating that the plea is not admissible as per rules.

It is to be mentioned here that Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar heard Sharif family’s petition to merge the NAB references at his chamber on November 16.

During the hearing, CJP rejected the appeal and ordered accountability court to proceed with the cases separately.

SC disqualified Sharif from office in July over unreported sources of annual income of about $10,000, a salary the former premier denies ever receiving. The high court also ordered the NAB to investigate and conduct a trial into the Sharif family’s wider finances, including the London properties.
