Islamabad, Jan. 25 (TNS): The federal interior ministry kept mum over detention of former Tehreek-e-Taliban-Pakistan (TTP) spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan.

At the meeting, held under the chair of Deputy Chairperson Senate Abdul Ghafoor Haidery in Islamabad, the ministry could not come up with a convincing answer to questions by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Farhatullah Babur, in which the latter asked about the nature of the cases against Ehsan.

In a written response, the ministry said they had no information regarding this, adding that the case against Ehsan had been sent to the civilian intelligence agencies, which refused to look into the matter.

The government had ordered authorities not to release the former TTP spokesperson without the court orders, the ministry said. Therefore, the case against Ehsan will be referred to a special committee on the interior ministry’s recommendations to decide about the possibility of Ehsan being tried in a military court, it added.

Ehsanullah Ehsan had surrendered to the authorities last year. A petition seeking his release had been filed in the Peshawar High Court (PHC), but the ruling in the case had strictly asked the government not to release the TTP mouthpiece.
