Pakistan, Indonesia agree to boost defence, trade ties

ISLAMABAD Jan 27 (TNS): Pakistan and Indonesia have agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation to further strengthen defence and trade relations.

The agreement came during a meeting between President Mamnoon Hussain and his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo in Islamabad.

Both the leaders stressed that expanded trade, investment and economic cooperation should be a vital element in their relationship.

President Mamnoon Hussain said both countries can utilize expertise of each other in defence production.

The two sides also agreed that peace in Afghanistan is necessary for development and prosperity of the region.

President Mamnoon Hussain said Pakistan and Indonesia have similar views on international issues and should work together.

The Indonesian President said his country can play a positive role in the peace process of Afghanistan. He proposed the establishment of a committee of Indonesian, Afghan and Pakistani Ulema for this purpose.

President Mamnoon Hussain also took up with his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo the issue of Zulfiqar Ali, a Pakistani citizen imprisoned in Indonesian jail.

The President asked the dignitary to consider the matter on humanitarian grounds.

The Indonesian President said though it was a legal matter, he would look into it on humanitarian grounds.

Later, President Mamnoon Hussain hosted a banquet in honour of the later, visiting Indonesian President Joko Widodo and members of his entourage at President House in Islamabad.

The event was attended among others by Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq, parliamentarians, the services chiefs, diplomats, media persons and senior officials.
