Srinagar, Feb. 6 (TNS): A freedom fighter who was under custody on Indian forces in occupied Kasmir managed to flee while being taken to Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital after a police party escorting prisoners came under attack.

Two policemen are reported to have been killed, Indian media reported here on Tuesday.

The freedom fighter- identified as Abu Hanzulla a.k.a. Naveed Jatt – managed his daring escape after snatching a gun from the policemen who were escorting him and opening fire at them.

There were reports that other freedom fighters also attacked the police team.

The news agency PTI reported that freedom fighters opened fire on the police party that was with Hanzalla outside the SMHS Hospital.

Hanzula was among the six detainees who were being taken to the SMHS Hospital for medical check-ups.

“Six detainee(s) were being brought from Central Jail. Out of them, one snatched weapons from police and fired at the protection party,” the SSP of Srinagar Imtiaz Ismail Parray was quoted as saying by news ANI.

“One policeman is critically injured and another is injured. The prisoner’s name is Naveed. He is probably an outsider,” Parray added.

Parray also suggested that police and security personnel have launched a city-wide search operation in an effort to nab Naveed.
