IOK observes complete shutdown on Maqbool Bhat hanging anniversary

A complete shutdown was observed in IOK on the hanging anniversary of Maqbool Bhat, while puppet authorities deployed contingents of paramilitary forces to thwart any attempts of protests by the people.

In summer capital Srinagar’s downtown locality, strict restrictions were imposed by the authorities.

Residents said that contingents of forces arrived early in the morning. Curbs were laid at all the entry and exit points of the old city. People were allowed to move only after thorough frisking and checking by occupation Indian forces.

Business establishments and shops are closed with markets wore a deserted look in Srinagar and other areas of the region.

Shutdown was also observed in Banihal town as well on the Bhat’s hanging anniversary. Reports said all commercial establishments in the area remained closed, while traffic was off the roads.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for complete shutdown on the hanging anniversary of Bhat.

Meanwhile Police on Sunday foiled a proposed UN march of Hurryet activists on the hanging anniversary of Maqbool Bhat to its headquarters in the region at Sonwar in Srinagar.

Scores of leaders and activists of Hurryyet outfits took out a march from Srinagar to submit the same however, a contingent of police stopped them and prevented their march to the UN office by detaining several leaders.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were put under house arrest, while Yasin Malik has been lodged in Central Jail to prevent them from leading any protest rallies.

Earlier, authorities deployed contingents of paramilitary forces to enforce restrictions in the region and thwart any attempts of protests.

JRL had called for UN march to present a memorandum regarding the return of mortal remains of Bhat and Guru who were hanged and buried in Tihar jail.
