Islamabad, Feb. 14 (TNS): World Radio Day observed with theme “Radio and Sports”. The two hour seminar was organized by News and Current Affairs Channel of Radio Pakistan in Islamabad to mark the day.

Speakers at a seminar in connection with World Radio Day have lauded the vital role being played by Radio Pakistan in promotion of sports activities in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Country Representative UNESCO Vibeke Jensen said the theme of the World Radio Day this year is “Radio and Sports”. She said the objective of the day is to raise awareness among general public about importance of radio for promotion of sports activities. She said radio has power to reach the remote areas of the country in order to transmit information to the people.

She said radio has an important role in broadcasting mainstream sports, culture and freedom of expression. She said radio helps bring peace and development together through sports.

Vibeke Jenson said that radio is the only medium that can reach to each and every corner of the country. She said that sports coverage should also ensure the gender balance because the women remained under represented in the media.

In his video message, Director General Radio Pakistan Shafqat Jalil said that the programs of Radio Pakistan are aimed at providing information, education and entertainment to the listeners.

He said that Radio Pakistan is committed to promote harmony and peace in the country through its programmes.

DG PBC said we always kept the people abreast of the sports activities at national and international level.

In his welcome address, Radio Pakistan’s Director News and Current Affairs Javed Khan Jadoon said that Radio Pakistan is playing its due role for the promotion of sports activities not only in the country but at the global level as well.

He said the motive of Radio Pakistan is to educate and create awareness among youth of the country about different aspects including sports.

He said peace has been restored in the country and now the international teams are turning their directions towards Pakistan.

Javed Khan Jadoon said that Radio Pakistan is voice of nation and it is the sole medium that is catering the needs of rural population. He said ten minutes segment is devoted to sports in the Khabarnama at 8:00 pm. He said the News and Current Affairs Channel also broadcasts one hour daily sports programme at four in the afternoon.

In his address, Director General Sports Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera emphasized the need for promotion of indigenous sports through radio in order to involve the youth of the country in sports activities. He said the government is paying attention towards promotion of sports activities in the country. He said we are also devising a national sports policy for bolstering sports in the country. He said the government is providing all-out facilities with regard to sports at the district level.

On the occasion, message of UN Secretary General António Guterres was also screened.

During the show, a cake was also cut to mark the World Radio Day.
