AAP holds seminar on “sanitary workers problems and solutions”

Khanewal, Feb 20 (TNS):  The Action Against Poverty (AAP) has organized a seminar titled “sanitary workers problems and their solutions”   to raise awareness at Khanewal Press Club.

The seminar was attended by Nayer Allarakha Javed , Sohotra Sarfraz Clement Director AAP, members of union councils of seven districts of Punjab and civil society members. While speaking to the seminar Sarfraz Clement has said that the prime aim of organizing this seminar is to highlighting the major issues facing the sanitary workers across the Punjab province. He said  we have done a lot of work to highlight the workers problems among high ups.

The purpose of the today,s seminar is to increase the awareness about their problems and the funds which announce by the government for welfare of the workers, he added. He said the government has issued the funds but the funds are not utilized in proper ways to benefit a sanitary worker.  He said  absence of safety gear and equipment, lack of training, unorganized  and unsupervised work to clear clogged sewers have been endangering lives of sanitary workers who run the risk of inhaling highly-toxic gases while performing their work. He urged government to provide risk allowances for workers who endangered their lives to keep society clean.

Taj Sadiq a member union council has stressed sanitary workers to join hands to establish a federation which can support all the sanitary workers to secure their rights. He said the government has issued funds for welfare being of the workers but due to lack of awareness the funds have not been utilized in right places.  Pervaid Akhter Naz, General Secretary, Mazdoor Union said that we are also facing several problems  but we are united now and geeting benefit from government. Nayer Allah Rakha said that sanitary workers need a federation across Punjab to access their basic rights.  He said he will provide legal assistance to set up a federation.
