Islamabad Feb 27 (TNS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday disposed of the suo moto notice it had taken over the murder of Mashal Khan after a trail court convicted several accused in the murder.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar observed that since the trial court has handed down punishment to the accused, there was no need to proceed the case further.

A senior KP police officer told the apex court that they have already filed an appeal against the acquittal of some accused in the murder case.

On February 7, the trial court condemned one person to death and 25 years prison term to five others in the Mashal Murder case. The trial court acquitted 26 other accused after the prosecution failed to furnish evidence against them. Some accused are still absconding in the lynching case. Mashal 23, was lynched to death on the premises of Abdul Wali Khan University by an enraged mob on April 13, 2017, on the allegations of blasphemy. The videotaped murder sent shivers through the nation’s spine that also stirred a debate over the misuse of blasphemy laws with impunity.
