Islamabad March 28 (TNS): In a big blow to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the Election Commission of Pakistan in an unexpected move barred independent senators from joining the ruling party.

As the Constitution and the ECP laws are silent, the poll body issued an order restraining the PML-N backed independent senators from joining the ruling party.

Now the Pakistan People’s Party has become the largest party in the Upper House of the Parliament with 20 senators followed by PML-N with 17 senators and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf with 12 senators.

The PML-N backed senators will, however, continue to back the ruling party,  despite not being permitted to join the PML-N, as most of them are die-hard party loyalists and they could not ditch the PML-N at testing times.

Critics say that the poll body has become a tool at the hands of the powers that be and it was putting every hurdle to stop the PML-N having hand an upper hand in the parliament especially after the next general election. The critics also said that the powers that be were making all-out efforts to create bottlenecks in the way of the PML-N to the benefit of a particular party.
