Islamabad April 9 (TNS): Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday cast doubt on fairness and transparency in the next general elections saying the ongoing maneuvering by certain forces led credence to the doubts.
Talking to the media outside the accountability court in Islamabad, he said that he was equally concerned that some unseen forces were working to delay the next elections, which, he said would be resisted tooth and nail.
The former premier said that though the chief justice was speaking the language of Asif Zardari and Imran Khan in his case hearings, he should ensure that everyone was given a level playing field in the next elections.
He said that there was no provision in the constitution that the elections were delayed or prolonged. He said that circumstances indicate that the country was drifting towards unfair elections, which was tantamount to pre-poll rigging and no one will accept them.
He also defended the Punjab government in service delivery and claimed that the province was much better than the three other federating units when it came to the provision of service and basic amenities.
Earlier, Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar appeared before the trial court in the Avenfield reference.
Sharif told the media that he was consulting his lawyer an application can be submitted to the court seeking live telecast of the trial proceedings.
Earlier, Maryam had demanded live telecast of the trial court’s proceedings.
Sharif further said that he has spoken to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi about the caretaker set up.
