In a declaration issued following the trilateral meeting, scholars backed President Ashraf Ghani’s offer of peace talks to the Taliban that was made in February.

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo, who opened the conference, emphasized on Pakistan’s role in Afghan peace and reiterated his country’s commitment to help the process.

‘No fatwa against the Taliban’

Earlier in March, the Taliban expressed opposition to the conference.

According to a report, the Afghan Taliban representatives visited Jakarta for talks to ensure that no fatwa is issued and no speech is delivered against them.
