Turin, May 17 (TNS): Juventus’ long serving goalkeeper Gianluingi Buffon is set to leave the club in the summer after 17 years of stay at the club. The veteran announced on Sunday that Saturday’s game against Verona wil be his last appearance for the club.
The 40-year-old Italian goalkeeper was expected to announce his retirement at the end of the season, but for now, he has not announced official retirement.
Reports suggest that Buffon’s last appearance for Italy might come against the Netherlands on June 4, which will be a friendly contest between the two sides.
Speaking on his plans after departing the club, Buffon said,“What am I going to do? Saturday, I’m playing a match and it’s the only thing that’s certain,” he continued. “Until 15 days ago, I was sure to stop playing, but I received some exciting proposals, both on and off the pitch. Off the pitch, the most interesting was made to me by Juventus president Andrea Agnelli. Next week, after a few days of calm reflection, I will make a definite and certain decision.”
Buffon led the Juventus side to 7 straight Serie A titles and 4 consecutive Italian Cups, winning the double with the Turin side this season.
He is Italy’s most Capped player with 176 appearances and in his 655 club appearances, the cult hero has the record of 30 clean sheets.
The Italian goalkeeper holds the record of 974 minutes without conceding a goal in the Italian league (Serie A).
