SC directs Ufone, Balochistan, Punjab Gov’ts to deposit compensation money to families of 6 labours killed in Kharan

ISLAMABAD, May 18 (TNS): Supreme Court directed cellular service provider Ufone, governments of Balochistan and Punjab to deposit compensation amount in the account of District Session Judge Okara for the families of six labourers, gunned down while fixing the company’s tower in Liji, District Kharan.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Umar Atta Bandial, and Justice Ijazul Ahsan directed while hearing suo moto notice taken on the killing of labourers belonging to Okara, Punjab on May 3. During course of proceedings, Ufone company, Advocate General (AG) Balochistan and AG Punjab submitted complete compensation plan for the bereaved families of labourers.

Counsel for the company informed the court that the company would pay Rs20,000 to Rs25,000 per month to the family of each victim for three years, however, all educational expenditures of the children of three widows would be beared from school to university.

Moreover, Rs1 million would also be paid to all families of victims. He said those persons who were injured in the attack would be compensated with Rs500,000 as well. He said Huawei, a mobile company, would also pay the victims of the Kharan district.

On query of the bench, AG Balochistan informed the court that the government would pay Rs1 million to the bereaved families, whereas Rs500,000 to the injured. Similarly, AG Punjab said Rs1 million to the families of victims and Rs500,000 to the injured would be paid.

The bench observed that almost Rs3.5 million would be enough for the bereaved families, however, the court would supervise the transaction and directed them to submit the compensation money to the account of Session Judge Okara who would distribute the amount. Subsequently, furthr hearing of the case was adjourned till first week of June.
