Islamabad, May 24(TNS): On the direction of the Supreme Court of Pakistan the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is investigating 179 mega corruption cases against several important high profile individuals including prominent politicians, industrialists, top bureaucrats and business tycoons.
Among the 179 cases of mega corruption, 22 related to financial corruption, 27 to housing societies and 71 pertained to corruption and misuse of authority by high-ranking public officials.
After the finalization of the investigation, 101 references had been filed in the respective accountability courts, where the corruption cases would be adjudicated in accordance with the law. Initially, 46 references were under trial before the Accountability Courts, on completion of investigation further 60 references were filed in which 5 cases have been decided so far through conviction of accused. Other than the 101references, 19 Inquiries and 23 Investigations are under process and 36 cases have been disposed-off.
NAB dealing with the cases of prominent politicians includes former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, ex-president Asif Ali Zardari, ex-Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, former prime ministers Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervez Ashraf, former prime minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, ex-CM Punjab Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, former chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Amir Haider Khan Hoti, former chief minister of Balochistan Aslam Raisani and former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain.
Other than the politician NAB Inquiries have also been authorized against Mian Muhammad Mansha, Malik Riaz Hussain Chairman of Bahria town, Management of DHA Islamabad, Ahad Cheema director general (LDA) Ex-Chairman NICL Ayaz Khan Niazi, Ex-IG (KP) Malik M. Naveed and Saeed Akhtar Gen Manager Pakistan Railways.
The hearing of NAB references against Sharif family is underway. National Accountability Bureau has filed three references – Al-Azizia, Flagship and Avenfield against Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and MNA Capt (retd) Safdar.
