ISLAMABAD, August 1(TNS): Awami Muslim League (AML) leader Sheikh Rashid withdrew his petition pertaining to delay in polls on Wednesday as the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to conduct elections in NA-60 constituency (Rawalpindi-IV).
In a media talk outside SC, the AML leader said that change can only come with Imran Khan at the helm and the nation is desperate for change.
“Rashid Shafiq will contest election from our side in NA-60. One of my contenders was disqualified while the other withdrew in my support,” said Rashid.
After Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’ Hanif Abbasi’s disqualification on July 22 in Control of Narcotics case, the ECP postponed polling in the NA-60 constituency.
Rashid challenged the postponement of elections in the constituency and gave the argument that polls can only be delayed if a candidate passes away in Lahore High Court and Supreme Court however; both his petitions were rejected, on the basis that it is practically impossible to hold elections in NA-60 on July 25.
The ECP later gave an explanation that, it would take a lot of time to print new ballot papers for the 700,000 voters residing in the constituency.
The chief justice had also advised Rashid to wait and contest a ‘fair’ election instead of winning on a walkover, after Abbasi’s disqualification.
