Pervez Elahi elected as Punjab Assembly speaker, amid ruckus from opposition benches

Lahore, August 16 (TNS): Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) leader Chaudhary Pervez Elahi has been elected as the new Punjab Assembly speaker on Thursday, amid ruckus, which broke out from PML-N opposition benches.

The former Chief Minister of Punjab was the candidate of the coalition led by PTI government in the provincial assembly bagged 201 votes, whereas the PML-N candidate Chaudhary Iqbal Gujjar fielded against him secured 145 votes.

Outgoing speaker of the provincial assembly (PA) Rana Muhammad Iqbal administered the oath taking of the newly elected speaker.

Earlier Ruckus from the opposition benches broke out, as a woman MPA, Sadiqa Sahibdad who hailed from PTI showed off her ballet violating the conduct of ballet for secrecy.

The PA Speaker cancelled the vote of the lawmaker on the spot and the voting process resumed.

After the election for speaker and deputy speaker of the house, the new chief minister will be elected through secret balloting.
