Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan passes away

Washington, August 18 (TNS): The Former United Nations Secretary-General (UN-SG) Kofi Annan passed away at the age of 80 on Saturday, his family announced on Twitter.

The Ghanian diplomat’s death was announced in a statement posted on his official Twitter account.

“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness…” the statement read.

Annan served as the seventh UN secretary-general from 1996 to 2007 and also received Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.
