Kabul, August 26 (TNS): National Security Advisor of Afghanistan Hanif Atmar has resigned from his post on late Saturday and has been replaced by Hamdullah Mohib.

Hamdullah Mohib is currently serving as the Afghan Ambassador to the United States.

Atmar’s resignation letter cited “serious differences over policies and approaches at the top level of government” as the reason for his resignation. He also claimed to have had differences in terms of “national unity, national consensus, peace and security political management, electoral affairs, good governance and regional affairs,” local media reported.

The report further noted that Atmar, who has served as a close aide to President Ashraf Ghani since 2014, resigned in order to prepare for next year’s presidential elections.
