FIA mandated to carry out forensic audit into petroleum crisis: Asad Umar

Islamabad: March 26, 2021 (TNS): Federal Investigation Agency has been mandated to carry out forensic audit into the petroleum crisis that hit the country last year in June, in order to prosecute those responsible for it.

This was stated by Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar while addressing a news conference along with Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood and Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari in Islamabad today (Friday).

Asad Umar said the FIA has been tasked to complete the audit in ninety days period.

He said Special Assistant on Petroleum Nadeem Babar has been directed to step down whilst the Secretary Petroleum will report to the Establishment Division.

The Minister for Planning said the laws will also be revisited in order to award strict punishment and fines to those behind the hoarding of petroleum products as well as those who lend support to them.

He said the forensic audit is also aimed at identifying the government officials behind the petroleum crisis.

Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood said the purpose behind the stepping down of Special Assistant on Petroleum is to ensure transparency in the investigation.
