LAHORE July 24 (TNS): A teenage domestic worker, named Sonia, kept in illegal detention at the residence of anchorperson Gharidah Farooqui was recovered on court order by the police on Monday.

Muhammad Munir, the father of the domestic worker, filed a petition in a local court, accusing the respondent of illegally confining his daughter, subjecting her to torture and not allowing her to meet her parents.

The petition said that his daughter was in danger, if she was not recovered from the possession of the respondent, she would suffer an irreparable loss and injury. The court directed the police to recover the detainee and produce before the court.

A video released on social media related to this case shows Gharidah Farooqui threatening the parents of the domestic worker and saying: “I’ve spent Rs. 40,000 on your daughter. Give me the money and take back the girl.”

When Gharidah Farooqui was contacted and asked regarding the episode she expressed ‘complete lack of knowledge about it’.

This is not the first case of violence against a domestic worker. Several cases have been reported by the media so far. Countless cases remained unreported. Female domestic workers usually come from the poverty-stricken families as they seek work as servants in affluent homes. Their wages are less than the minimum. They are often overworked and underpaid.
