Karachi July 18 (TNS): Three people were killed as a three-storey residential building caved in here at Liaquatabad locality in the early hours of Tuesday.
The building, which collapsed in Liaquatabad No 9 at around 2am, was decrepit. As a result, nine people plus four women were injured who got trapped underneath the debris.
Rescue workers pulled out the survivors and bodies from under the rubble and shifted them to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). A large number of rescue workers and police officials took part in the rescue operation. It is feared that some victims are still trapped.
The building was already in a dilapidated state and the third storey had been illegally built a few months ago, area residents told.
Area residents said four families had been residing in the building, which had tea and paan shops on its ground floor.
Deputy Commissioner Capt (Rtd) Fariduddin Mustafa said it could take up to 24 hours to remove the debris after as the street is narrow.
