FC major, sepoy martyred suicide blast

PESHAWAR JULY 17 (TNS): In a suicide blast in Hayatabad area here Monday morning a Frontier Corps major and sepoy were martyred, while 10 others were injured.

The explosion occurred near the Bagh-e-Naran Chowk in Hayatabad, SP Cantonment Peshawar Imran Malik said.

According to SSP Operations Sajjad Khan the injured included three personnel and seven civilians.

The bomber was riding a motorbike, wearing a suicide jacket with 10-11 kilograms of explosive material, according to the Bomb Disposal Unit officials.  The suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest after bringing it close to the side of the vehicle where the major was sitting.

The FC convoy was travelling from its camp in Hayatabad to the headquarters in Qila Bala Hisar. The vehicle was moving when the blast occurred, he said.

Two vehicles that were part of the convoy were damaged in the blast. After cordoning off the area the rescue officials shifted the injured to Hayatabad Medical Complex.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the blast as yet.

The attack came a day after the Pakistan Army announced a fresh operation in Khyber Agency’s Rajgal Valley to ‘forestall entry’ of the militant group from across the border.

A military spokesman earlier had told the arrests made in connection with last month’s Parachinar attack revealed links with terrorists on the other side of the border.

The number of attacks in the country has fallen around 70 per cent, due to a combination of the military offensive against Taliban bases along the Afghan border and government initiatives to tackle militancy, but attacks on security and civilian targets continue to occur occasionally.
