The age old visual markers were ticked off \u2014 a man with kohl rimmed eyes who spits adaabs in every sentence with the backdrop of Pakistan manufacturing nuclear weapons. Actor Sanam Saeed spoke to Brut India about this kind of stereotyping and Bollywood\u2019s ban on Pakistani artists, saying she doesn\u2019t get why politics needs to penetrate cultural collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Zindagi Gulzar Hai<\/em>\u00a0actor shared her favourite Bollywood film \u2014\u00a0<em>Queen<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 terming the relatability factor as the reason. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t a spectacle,\u201d she said, as the conversation shifted to the way Muslims are often captured through the Bollywood lens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, we always make fun of how Muslims are portrayed in Indian films with the\u00a0<em>kajol<\/em>\u00a0[kohl],\u00a0<em>namaz ki topi<\/em>\u00a0[prayer cap] and the green in the background somewhere to show that this is a Muslim person or Muslim community. It gets too political, they\u2019ve always been highlighted as the enemy.\u201d She added that she doesn\u2019t recall seeing any projects where the two nations are friends and are collaborating together. It felt very exhilarating, very liberating and kind of complete that finally these two hubs of culture, creativity and art were collaborating to form even greater stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She juxtaposed her sentiments after the ban was imposed due to the Uri attack in 2016. \u201cIt was a bit of a rude awakening, confusing \u2014 why mix politics with art and culture? Tragic but also, I guess we all got over it, it is what it is \u2014 you can\u2019t fight it, there\u2019s nothing you can do about it. Except stuff like this, what we\u2019re doing now,\u201d she said adding that despite everything, the artists are still trying to make their way and work together. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate, it\u2019s very tragic and unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about her views on Mahira Khan\u2019s comments about being wary of taking up Indian OTT projects which came around the time Saeed starred in\u00a0<em>ZEE5<\/em>\u2018s\u00a0<em>Qatil Haseenaon Ke Naam,<\/em>\u00a0she said their situations were different. \u201cI never worked in Bollywood \u2014 this isn\u2019t Bollywood, Bollywood is a completely different ballgame. By the time I was getting my foot in the door, the ban had come. Fawad [Khan] and Mahira really were at the brunt of it so I\u2019m sure they are nervous and scared because of how they were treated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a confusing place to be in when one second you\u2019re here and the next second you\u2019re completely let go off.
