ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan said on Thursday that the entire political status quo was against him.
\n\u201cRight now I\u2019m afraid, I have powerful enemies,\u201d Imran Khan said in an interview with Bloomberg.<\/p>\n
He also suspected that the next general elections could be rigged to keep him out of power. \u201cWe know exactly who was responsible for the regime change [that dislodged the PTI from power last year].\u201d<\/p>\n
He said that he\u2019s confident of returning to power this year, and would back a continued role for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to prop up the economy and stave off a growing risk of a debt default.<\/p>\n
The PTI chairman said that he expected to win a majority when elections were held.<\/p>\n
He said he\u2019s preparing a \u201cradical\u201d plan to shore up an economy that he predicts will be in even worse shape by then.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we get into power, we won\u2019t have much time,\u201d the 70-year-old politician said at his residence in Lahore, where he\u2019s recovering from a leg injury sustained when he was shot at a protest in November.<\/p>\n
Asked if his plan would involve sticking with the IMF \u2014 whose accord for about $6.5 billion of lending to Pakistan has seen multiple delays \u2014 he said: \u201cWe have no choice now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will have to make policies like never before in our country,\u201d Imran said. \u201cWe fear a Sri Lanka-type situation,\u201d he said, referring to the default in Pakistan\u2019s regional neighbour.<\/p>\n
