{"id":121519,"date":"2025-04-03T14:58:39","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T09:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=121519"},"modified":"2025-04-03T14:58:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T09:58:39","slug":"london-tns-new-secretary-general-shirley-botchwey-pledges-to-advance-commonwealth-values-in-a-divided-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=121519","title":{"rendered":"London (TNS) New Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey pledges to advance Commonwealth values in a divided world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Rehan Khan<\/p>\n<p>London, Wednesday, 2 April 2025 (TNS): Former Ghanaian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has assumed office as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, pledging to advance the values of the Commonwealth Charter at a time of growing global tensions and shifting alliances.<\/p>\n<p>Botchwey succeeds Patricia Scotland, whose nine-year term ended in March.<\/p>\n<p>She is the first African woman \u2013 the second African overall \u2013 to lead the association of 56 countries, which make up a third of the world\u2019s population and more than a quarter of the United Nations membership.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-121519-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyurdutimes.com.pk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Video-2025-04-02-at-23.58.31_a4c88d6f-1-1-1.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyurdutimes.com.pk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Video-2025-04-02-at-23.58.31_a4c88d6f-1-1-1.mp4\">https:\/\/dailyurdutimes.com.pk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Video-2025-04-02-at-23.58.31_a4c88d6f-1-1-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Speaking at the Commonwealth Secretariat\u2019s headquarters the other day, the Secretary-General acknowledged the scale of the challenges confronting the world.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cThe world we woke up to today is unlike any we have seen in our lifetimes. The consequences of lower economic growth, increased defence expenditures, and a frayed multilateralism will affect our pockets directly, increase unemployment and poverty, reduce social protection and weaken our resilience to shocks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe value of our Commonwealth stands in bold relief, in a time like this. For over 75 years, the Commonwealth has been a unique and powerful force for good. Now we must seize the moment to realise the transformation our societies seek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General highlighted the power of Commonwealth unity in uncertain times. \u201cThe challenges we face are real and serious,\u201d she said, \u201cbut together, we are more than equal to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on Commonwealth values, Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey added, \u201cSustained by the values that bind us &#8211; democracy, good governance, peace, human rights, and equal opportunity &#8211; we will build a future in which dignity, opportunity, and prosperity are within reach for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49516 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyurdutimes.com.pk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-04-02-at-23.56.55_27a02d08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1050\" \/>The Secretary-General outlined three strategic priorities for her leadership, calling them the foundation for a \u201cCommonwealth built on all talents\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>First, she pledged to equip women and young people with the skills, tools and opportunities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the Secretary-General vowed to revitalise trade, investment and connectivity across the Commonwealth, describing it as a pathway to industrial development, productivity and inclusive growth. No country, she stressed, should be left behind, regardless of its size or income level.<br \/>\nThird, calling climate change \u201cthe greatest challenge of our time,\u201d she pledged to mobilise stronger action and advocate for reforms of the international financial system to help small and other vulnerable Commonwealth states access the support they need.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General also committed to accelerating the Commonwealth\u2019s modernisation by delivering faster and smarter partnerships to meet the needs of all its people.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on her own historic journey, she said, \u201cIt is a great honour to be the first African woman to serve as Secretary-General.
