{"id":15417,"date":"2017-08-24T13:11:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-24T08:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=15417"},"modified":"2017-08-24T13:11:02","modified_gmt":"2017-08-24T08:11:02","slug":"china-asks-us-to-respect-pakistans-sovereignty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=15417","title":{"rendered":"China asks US to respect Pakistan\u2019s sovereignty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BEIJING, AUG 24 (TNS):<\/strong> China&#8217;s top diplomat has defended Pakistan&#8217;s \u201cimportant role\u201d in Afghanistan in a phone call with United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, after US President Trump accused Pakistan of harboring militants.<\/p>\n<p>China State Councillor Yang Jiechi told Tillerson on Wednesday that \u201cwe should attach importance to the important role that Pakistan plays in the Afghanistan issue, respect (Pakistan&#8217;s) sovereignty and legitimate security concerns,\u201d according to a foreign ministry statement.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second time Beijing has defended its neighbor this week, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying praising Pakistan on Tuesday for making \u201cgreat sacrifices and contributions to fighting terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Yang said Beijing was committed to \u201cadvancing the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan\u201d and that political dialogue was \u201cthe only way to solve the Afghanistan problem\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cChina would like to continue to maintain communication and coordination on the Afghanistan problem with the US side\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The call between the US and Chinese diplomats came after new tensions arose between the two powers on Wednesday as Washington slapped sanctions on Chinese companies accused of links with North Korea, angering Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>China has also warned Washington against triggering any \u201ctrade war\u201d after Trump ordered an investigation into Beijing&#8217;s intellectual property practices. But the ministry statement issued late Wednesday did not say whether Tillerson and Yang discussed the trade issue, the sanctions or the North Korean nuclear crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Yang said Washington and Beijing communicate and cooperate on a \u201cwide range of areas\u201d and the two diplomats discussed Trump&#8217;s planned visit to China later this year.
