{"id":16115,"date":"2017-08-28T13:11:36","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T08:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=16115"},"modified":"2017-08-28T13:11:36","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T08:11:36","slug":"pm-abbasi-says-trumps-new-strategy-will-also-fail-stresses-political-settlement-in-afghanistan-wont-let-the-war-in-afghanistan-spill-into-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=16115","title":{"rendered":"PM Abbasi says Trump\u2019s new strategy will also fail; stresses political settlement in Afghanistan; won\u2019t let the war in Afghanistan spill into Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEW YORK Aug. 28 (TNS):<\/strong> Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has stressed the need for a political settlement in Afghanistan, saying that like previous US plans President Donald Trump\u2019s new strategy for America\u2019s longest-running war in that country will also fail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom day one we have been saying very clearly the military strategy in Afghanistan has not worked and it will not work,\u201d Mr Abbasi said while giving interview to Bloomberg News an international news agency based in New York.<\/p>\n<p>There has to be a \u201cpolitical settlement,\u201d he said in the interview that took place in Karachi on Saturday night. \u201cThat\u2019s the bottom line,\u201d the prime minister added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Abbasi said that while his government supported the fight against terrorists it would not let the war in Afghanistan spill into Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>The war has cost the US about $714 billion and several thousand lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not intend to allow anybody to fight Afghanistan\u2019s battle on Pakistan\u2019s soil,\u201d Mr Abbasi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever has to happen in Afghanistan should be happening in Afghanistan,\u201d he said. \u201cPakistan doesn\u2019t harbor terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Abbasi said Pakistan was willing to work with all countries, including India, from which Mr Trump sought help to develop Afghanistan\u2019s economy, to achieve regional stability.<\/p>\n<p>Still, he added, the Afghan government should be \u201cowning\u201d the issue and dealing with the Taliban.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they require our support, our support is available,\u201d he said. \u201cOur support is unconditional as far as terrorism is concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Sunday said the new strategy was intended to pressure the Taliban into negotiating with the Afghan government by \u201csending a message to the Taliban that we are not going anywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the president\u2019s been clear that this is a dramatic shift in terms of the military strategy,\u201d Mr Tillerson said on the Fox News Sunday programme.
