{"id":28303,"date":"2017-11-01T22:29:25","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T17:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=28303"},"modified":"2017-11-01T22:29:25","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T17:29:25","slug":"pakistanis-among-new-yorks-muslims-prepare-for-post-terror-spike-in-hate-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=28303","title":{"rendered":"Pakistanis among New York&#8217;s Muslims prepare for post-terror spike in hate crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New York, Nov. 1 (TNS):<\/strong> Hate crimes against New York City\u00a0Muslims were on the rise even before Tuesday&#8217;s terror attack in lower Manhattan\u2014but the region&#8217;s Pakistanis, Arabs, Turks and other followers of Islam are preparing for more incidents as New York mourns its eight terror victims, US media reported on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Newsweek report, the number of crimes against Muslims and people of color often spikes in the U.S. following a terror attack\u2014in this case, one committed by\u00a0a young Uzbek man who, cops said, emerged from a truck\u00a0screaming \u201cAllahu Akbar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liberal New York is often upheld as a stronghold of diversity and tolerance, but hate crimes against Muslims were up\u00a0560 percent last year, according to Afaf Nasher, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, reports are coming in that will shatter that number,&#8221; she told\u00a0<em>Newsweek<\/em>. &#8220;Hate crimes are very real in New York, and people do get hassled whether it\u2019s in the street or in schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The New York Police Department&#8217;s hate crimes unit reports that half the known\u00a0hate crimes\u00a0in the first two quarters of 2017 were against Muslims. The number of hate crimes in New York had already increased by\u00a030 percent\u00a0in 2016, according to NYPD statistics, with\u00a0anti-Muslim and sexual orientation issues driving\u00a0that increase.<\/p>\n<p>Experts are concerned that political rhetoric targeting\u00a0Muslims and how to keep &#8220;them&#8221;\u00a0out of the country\u00a0will only fan the flames of hate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rhetoric [American] politicians use after an attack has a very strong correlation with hate\u00a0crimes,\u201d said Harris Zafar, the author of Demystifying Islam and a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When people after the New York\u00a0attack say there is a problem with Muslims coming into the country, that there is a problem with mosques, there is fear there will cause a spike of hate crimes against Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur primary concern is what happened in Manhattan and the innocent lives lost and how we stop this radicalization problem,&#8221; Zafar added. &#8220;But even listening to the rhetoric after the attack of course we can assume there will be more animosity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York, Nov. 1 (TNS): Hate crimes against New York City\u00a0Muslims were on the rise even before Tuesday&#8217;s terror attack in lower Manhattan\u2014but the region&#8217;s Pakistanis, Arabs, Turks and other followers of Islam are preparing for more incidents as New York mourns its eight terror victims, US media reported on Wednesday.
