{"id":28791,"date":"2017-11-04T13:59:03","date_gmt":"2017-11-04T08:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=28791"},"modified":"2017-11-04T13:59:03","modified_gmt":"2017-11-04T08:59:03","slug":"icc-seeks-investigation-into-war-crimes-in-afghanistan-since-2003","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=28791","title":{"rendered":"ICC seeks investigation into war crimes in Afghanistan since 2003"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PARIS, Nov 4 (TNS):<\/strong>\u00a0 The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court requested judicial authorization Friday to begin a formal investigation into possible war crimes committed in Afghanistan, a probe that could implicate American forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades, the people of Afghanistan have endured the scourge of armed conflict,\u201d Fatou Bensouda, a Gambian lawyer who has served as the ICC\u2019s chief prosecutor since 2012, said in a statement. Her office is pushing to open an investigation because \u201cthere is a reasonable basis to believe that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed\u201d in Afghanistan, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Following jurisdictional parameters, Bensouda clarified that any resulting investigation would consider only alleged war crimes committed on Afghan soil after May 1, 2003. \u00a0However, alleged crimes committed since July 1, 2002, in other states but that were \u201cclosely linked to the situation in Afghanistan\u201d also would be considered, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rights activists applauded the announcement. \u201cWe welcome \u00a0he ICC President\u2019s action convening a pre-trial chamber of judges to consider the Prosecutor\u2019s request to begin an investigation in Afghanistan,\u201d Human Rights Watch, a prominent advocacy group, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>In her brief, open-ended statement, Bensouda did not expressly name U.S. or NATO forces as direct parties to be investigated.
