{"id":29055,"date":"2017-11-05T16:59:31","date_gmt":"2017-11-05T11:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=29055"},"modified":"2017-11-05T16:59:31","modified_gmt":"2017-11-05T11:59:31","slug":"seven-dead-over-45-injured-in-smog-related-incidents-over-two-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=29055","title":{"rendered":"Seven dead, over 45 injured in smog-related incidents over two days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LAHORE Nov 05 (TNS):<\/strong> Foul weather and smog continue to envelop numerous cities of Punjab, shutting off commutes, disrupting flights, and resulting in unscheduled power outages.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 24 hours, numerous road accidents have occurred due to low visibility, claiming the life of one person and wounding at least seven others.<\/p>\n<p>In total, seven people have died, with over 45 injured, in traffic accidents over a two-day period due to smog and worsening weather.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday morning, one person was killed and several injured in a smog-related road accident in Gaggo Mandi, Vehari.<\/p>\n<p>The M2, M3, and M4 motorways have presently been reopened after being closed off due to extremely low visibility \u2014 the worst being 0-20 metres .<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, two flights for Multan landed in Karachi and Lahore as the low visibility made landing impossible at the Multan airport.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in Kashmore, unit number 15 and 16 of the Guddu Thermal Power House tripped due to the smog, which deposits pollutants and chemicals on power lines, resulting in disruption of electricity to various parts of Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan. Officials said the units of the 480-megawatt plant will be restored once the smog clears.<\/p>\n<p>The Punjab government has also imposed Section 144 in the province, banning the burning of crops, tyres, and garbage until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>Smog \u2014 a chemical reaction that causes air to be significantly polluted and hinders traffic visibility \u2014 has impaired traffic routes as well flight schedules.<\/p>\n<p>Road accidents<\/p>\n<p>Three people were killed while 18 were injured in various smog-related road accidents on Saturday. Over the last 24 hours, six people were killed and dozens injured in various accidents.<\/p>\n<p>Five people lost their lives while nine were injured in Kamonki when a passenger van collided with a bus on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>A truck-bus crash on the motorway near Jalalpur Bhattian left one man dead and five others wounded.<\/p>\n<p>A multi-vehicle accident on M2 motorway \u2014 near Sargodha section and involving eight cars \u2014 left 10 people injured.<\/p>\n<p>The wounded were subsequently moved to Kot Addu Hospital, rescue sources said.<\/p>\n<p>A passenger van slammed into a truck in Sheikhupura, leaving 15 people injured. All the wounded belonged to the same family.<\/p>\n<p>In Lahore, four people were brought to a local hospital\u00a0after they were injured in a car crash.<\/p>\n<p>Four others were hurt after an oil tanker ran over a motorbike before bumping into a truck in Arifwala.<\/p>\n<p>Flight disruption<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, some five flights out of Multan and Faisalabad were cancelled due to the dense haze.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, three international flights \u2014 en route to Faisalabad \u2014 were disrupted; they were consequently diverted to Lahore.<\/p>\n<p>The smog has also triggered the closure of multiple sections of the motorway, primarily during nighttime.<\/p>\n<p>Motorway police commented that the visibility had dropped down to only 25-50 metres at various places from Lahore to Bhera. Authorities have, therefore, advised citizens to be careful while driving on highways and strongly recommended the use of fog lights.<\/p>\n<p>Power outages<\/p>\n<p>Various power plants tripped due to smog, causing prolonged electricity outages in different cities \u2014 primarily in Punjab.<\/p>\n<p>The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has announced to carry out hour-long, scheduled load-shedding every hour today.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the duration of power outages in many cities of Sindh has also been extended.<\/p>\n<p>In order to curb the shortfall, the government has announced to re-open furnace oil-based power plants.
