Islamabad, Nov. 6 (TNS)<\/strong>: Former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz is the biggest name Pakistani exposed in Paradise Papers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Paradise Papers is a global investigation into the offshore activities of some of the world\u2019s most powerful people and companies.<\/span><\/p>\n

At least two Pakistanis have been named in the Paradise papers \u2013 former prime minister Shaukat Aziz and former National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL) chairperson Ayaz Khan Niazi.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aziz is linked with Antarctic Trust, which was set up the former premier and includes his wife, children, and granddaughter as beneficiaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aziz had set up the trust in the US state of Delaware before becoming finance minister in 1999. He was working for financial giant Citibank at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Delaware is considered a domestic tax haven by US financial experts.
\nThe trust was not declared at any point during his time as finance minister or prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, in a 2012 internal memo, the law firm\u2019s compliance officer noted that Aziz had been accused by the opposition of false declaration of assets, corruption and misappropriation of funds. Three years later, in a database of high-risk clients, Appleby noted that a Pakistani court had issued three arrest warrants against Aziz in relation to the killing of Akbar Bugti. In September 2015, Antarctic Trust was closed and the related file removed from one of Appleby\u2019s internal databases.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to ICIJ, Aziz\u2019s lawyers have said that he was not legally required to declare the trust to Pakistani authorities. They added that the same applies to his wife and children. The lawyers added that Aziz paid all applicable US taxes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of the account was \u201cto ensure that if he were to die, his assets would pass efficiently to his family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ayaz Khan Niazi has connections with a trust and three offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) \u2013 Andalusian Discretionary Trust, Andalusian Establishment Limited, Andalusian Enterprises Limited and Andalusian Holdings Limited, respectively.
\nThe three companies were set up in 2010 when Niazi was NICL chairperson.<\/span><\/p>\n

Niazi\u2019s brothers Hussain Khan Niazi and Muhammad Ali Khan Niazi were shown as beneficial owners, whereas Ayaz, his father Abdul Razaq Khan, and mother Fauzia Razzaq acted as directors.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), ICIJ and 95 media partners explored 13.4 million leaked files from a combination of offshore service providers and the company registries of some of the world\u2019s most secretive countries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The leak reveals data of over 25,000 companies spanning 180 countries, from 1950 to 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

The files were obtained by S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung \u2013 the same German newspaper which the Panama Papers were leaked to.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
