New Delhi, Nov. 16 (TNS): The Indian Army is looking to\u00a0induct modern tanks and ICVs (Infantry Combat Vehicles) from\u00a02025-2027.<\/p>\n
Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has stressed the need for\u00a0platforms that are lighter in\u00a0weight so that they can be operated in\u00a0complex terrain, as\u00a0well as\u00a0be integrated with\u00a0other systems, Russian media reported.<\/p>\n
“It is a very complex system we are looking at\u00a0and we cannot make any mistakes,” he added.<\/p>\n
The army chief’s remark came days after\u00a0the Indian Army issued a global Request for\u00a0Information (RFI) for\u00a0the development and manufacturing of\u00a0Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) under\u00a0a strategic partnership model.<\/p>\n
“We will have to\u00a0look at\u00a0technology to\u00a0reduce the weight of\u00a0our war-fighting machines. We will have to\u00a0overcome terrain with\u00a0maneuvering space reducing\u2026 even down\u00a0south in\u00a0the desert, in\u00a0that sector hardening of\u00a0the desert has started,” Indian army chief added.<\/p>\n
In the RFI, the Indian Army has specified the requirement of\u00a0a 50-ton “new generation, state-of-the-art combat vehicle platform.” The proposed new tanks are not only meant to\u00a0replace the vintage T-72 tank fleet, but\u00a0will also form the base platform for\u00a0the main battle tank.<\/p>\n
It is estimated that replacing approximately 2,400 T-72 tanks will cost India approximately $8 billion. The procurement will involve the transfer of\u00a0technology of\u00a0at least 25 components including engine technology, automatic transmission system, tracks and suspension systems, energy storage technology, gun barrel metallurgy, advance technology tube launched ATGM, third generation thermal imaging sights, armor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) projectiles, ammunition for\u00a0tanks with\u00a0DoP>650 mm, full solution fire control systems, among\u00a0others.<\/p>\n
