{"id":34941,"date":"2017-12-05T11:28:41","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T06:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=34941"},"modified":"2017-12-05T11:28:41","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T06:28:41","slug":"oic-calls-for-summit-of-muslim-nations-if-us-takes-decision-to-recognize-jerusalem-as-israels-capital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=34941","title":{"rendered":"OIC calls for summit of Muslim nations if US takes decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>RIYADH Dec 05 (TNS):<\/strong> The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Monday called for a summit of Muslim nations if the United States takes the controversial decision to\u00a0 recognize Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump faces a key decision this week over Jerusalem\u2019s status, potentially reversing years of US policy and prompting a furious response from the Palestinians and the Arab world.<\/p>\n<p>The 57-member OIC sought to amplify concern over the possible move in an emergency meeting on Monday in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea city of Jeddah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the United States takes the step of recognizing Jerusalem as the so-called capital of Israel, we unanimously recommend holding a meeting at the level of council of foreign ministers followed by an Islamic summit as soon as possible,\u201d the pan-Islamic body said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The OIC also warned that recognizing Jerusalem or establishing any diplomatic mission in the disputed city would be seen as a \u201cblatant attack on the Arab and Islamic nations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The status of Jerusalem is one of the most contentious issues of the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the international community, including the United States, does not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital, insisting the issue can only be resolved through final-status negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Central to the issue of recognition is the question of whether Trump decides to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>All foreign embassies are located in Tel Aviv with consular representation in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>Israelis and Palestinians are eagerly watching to see whether he again renews a waiver delaying the move, as his predecessors have done.<\/p>\n<p>There are suggestions that Trump will sign the waiver and decline to move the embassy for now, but later this week declare Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>Israel, which illegally seized the largely Arab eastern sector of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, claims both halves of the city as its \u201ceternal and undivided capital\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But the Palestinians want the eastern sector as capital of their state and fiercely oppose any Israeli attempt to extend sovereignty there.<\/p>\n<p>Several peace plans have come unstuck over debates on whether, and how, to divide sovereignty or oversee the city\u2019s sites holy to Christians, Jews and Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RIYADH Dec 05 (TNS): The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Monday called for a summit of Muslim nations if the United States takes the controversial decision to\u00a0 recognize Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital.
