{"id":45028,"date":"2018-01-17T16:33:05","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T11:33:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=45028"},"modified":"2018-01-17T16:33:05","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T11:33:05","slug":"saudi-arabia-depositing-2-billion-in-yemen-central-bank-to-back-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=45028","title":{"rendered":"Saudi Arabia depositing $2 billion in Yemen central bank to back currency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>RIYADH Jan 17 (TNS):<\/strong>\u00a0Saudi Arabia\u2019s King Salman ordered a deposit of $2 billion to be paid into Yemen\u2019s central bank on Wednesday to shore up the weak Yemeni currency, the Saudi government said.<\/p>\n<p>The move was made a day after the Yemeni prime minister issued a public plea for funds to prop up the rial and help stave off hunger in the war-torn country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a loan, it\u2019s a deposit and the legitimate Yemeni government will not have to pay it back,\u201d a source close to the Saudi government said.<\/p>\n<p>Yemen has been divided by nearly three years of civil war between the internationally recognized government, backed by Riyadh, based in the south, and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement which controls the north including the capital Sanaa.<\/p>\n<p>Its currency, the rial, has lost more than half its value against the US dollar and soaring prices have put some basic commodities out of reach for many Yemenis.<\/p>\n<p>Based in the southern port city of Aden, Yemen\u2019s Central Bank has struggled to pay public sector salaries on which many Yemenis depend amid dwindling foreign exchange reserves.<\/p>\n<p>The conflict has unleashed a humanitarian and economic crisis on the impoverished country.
