{"id":54953,"date":"2018-03-01T12:49:10","date_gmt":"2018-03-01T07:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=54953"},"modified":"2022-02-17T15:54:09","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T10:54:09","slug":"us-bill-seeking-closer-ties-with-taiwan-anger-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=54953","title":{"rendered":"US bill seeking closer ties with Taiwan anger China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington March 1 (TNS):<\/strong> The U.S. Senate on Wednesday passed a bill promoting closer U.S. ties with Taiwan, which China has warned could threaten stability in the Taiwan Strait, but drew praise from the self-ruled island which pledged to deepen cooperation.<br \/>\nBeijing considers democratic Taiwan to be a wayward province and integral part of \u201cone China\u201d, ineligible for state-to-state relations, and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control.<br \/>\nThe Senate passed the Taiwan Travel Act by unanimous consent. It passed the House of Representatives in January, also without opposition. The legislation only needs President Donald Trump\u2019s signature to become law.<br \/>\nThe bill says it should be U.S. policy to allow officials at all levels to travel to Taiwan to meet their Taiwanese counterparts, permit high-level Taiwanese officials to enter the United States \u201cunder respectful conditions\u201d and meet with U.S. officials, and encourage Taiwanese economic and cultural representatives to conduct business in the United States.<br \/>\nWhite House officials did not immediately respond when asked if Trump planned to sign the legislation. It would be unusual for a president to veto a measure that passed unanimously.<br \/>\nChina\u2019s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Senate\u2019s passing of the bill.<br \/>\nTaiwan\u2019s Foreign Ministry thanked the United States for the unanimous support for the bill and for the U.S. government\u2019s increasingly friendly and open attitude towards Taiwan.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Foreign Ministry will keep developing an even more substantive cooperative relationship with the United States, to promote both sides\u2019 joint values and mutually-beneficial interests,\u201d it said.<br \/>\nTaiwan\u2019s Presidential Office said the United States was its most important international ally, and that it would discuss the matter with the United States and further strengthen relations.<br \/>\nThe United States has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help it defend itself and is the island\u2019s main source of arms.
