Washington, March 16 (TNS): A Pakistani television show came under fire for its use of \u201cblackface\u201d on\u00a0light-skinned female models. The show\u00a0had the women\u2019s faces darkened with makeup for a contest.<\/p>\n
As the\u00a0BBC\u00a0reported, the morning show program,\u00a0Jago Pakistan Jago,\u00a0<\/em>included a\u00a0segment\u00a0titled \u201cMera Makeup Hai Kamal,\u201d in which contestants were challenged to apply bridal makeup intended for dark-skinned women. Trouble was, they used light-skinned models who repeatedly mentioned the difficulties of putting makeup on darker women.<\/p>\n So far, the show has not responded to the backlash.<\/p>\n Some\u00a0Twitter users argued that this isn\u2019t worth being \u201cupset\u201d\u00a0over since the models are brown. \u201cI thought we ran out of things to be upset over by calling Bruno Mars a cultural appropriator, but this is worse,\u201d\u00a0blogger\u00a0Ashley Rae\u00a0tweeted. \u201cBrown people can\u2019t be too brown or else they\u2019re pretending to be black.\u201d In response to Rae, a fellow user\u00a0said: \u201cThe problem of being easily offended is a reality though.\u201d<\/p>\n The desire to have lighter skin is a global\u00a0phenomenon. But Asian countries have faced criticism for the extremes women\u2014as well as\u00a0men\u2014go through to obtain fairer skin. \u201cIt starts when children are young,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Women of Worth founder Kavitha Emmanuel. \u201cThe moment a child is born, relatives start comparing siblings\u2019\u00a0skin color.
