{"id":57941,"date":"2018-03-26T14:28:22","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T09:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=57941"},"modified":"2018-03-26T14:28:22","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T09:28:22","slug":"facebook-losing-public-trust-opinion-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tns.world\/?p=57941","title":{"rendered":"Facebook losing public trust: opinion polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SAN FRANCISCO\/LONDON (TNS):<\/strong> Opinion polls published in the United States and Germany cast doubt over the level of trust people have in Facebook over privacy, as the firm ran advertisements in British and US newspapers apologizing to users.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than half of Americans trust Facebook to obey U.S. privacy laws, according to a Reuters\/Ipsos poll released on Sunday, while a survey published by Bild am Sonntag, Germany\u2019s largest-selling Sunday paper, found 60 percent of Germans fear that Facebook and other social networks are having a negative impact on democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg apologized for \u201ca breach of trust\u201d in advertisements placed in papers including the Observer in Britain and the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can\u2019t, we don\u2019t deserve it,\u201d said the advertisement, which appeared in plain text on a white background with a tiny Facebook logo.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s largest social media network is coming under growing government scrutiny in Europe and the United States, and is trying to repair its reputation among users, advertisers, lawmakers and investors.<\/p>\n<p>This follows allegations that the British consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly gained access to users\u2019 information to build profiles of American voters that were later used to help elect U.S. President Donald Trump in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in an interview on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press\u201d on Sunday that Facebook had not been \u201cfully forthcoming\u201d over how Cambridge Analytica had used Facebook data.<\/p>\n<p>Warner repeated calls for Zuckerberg to testify in person before U.S. lawmakers, saying Facebook and other internet companies had been reluctant to confront \u201cthe dark underbelly of social media\u201d and how it can be manipulated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u201cBREACH OF TRUST\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg acknowledged that an app built by a university researcher had \u201cleaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a breach of trust, and I\u2019m sorry we didn\u2019t do more at the time,\u201d Zuckerberg said, reiterating an apology first made last week in U.S. television interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook shares tumbled 14 percent last week.
