New Delhi, May 4 (TNS): The local administration imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Aligarh on Friday amid the tension after the violence over the display of a portrait of Pakistan\u2019s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah at the Aligarh Muslim University, Indian media reported. <\/span><\/p>\n Additional District Magistrate SB Singh told ‘DNA’<\/span>\u00a0that they had suspended internet services from 2 pm on Friday to midnight on May 5.<\/span><\/p>\n Singh said internet had also been suspended to \u201cavoid circulation of communal messages\u201d on social networking sites.<\/span><\/p>\n Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Hindu Yuva Vahini had walked into the Aligarh Muslim University on Wednesday, demanding that Jinnah\u2019s portrait be removed. Protests are still underway at the university. Some students reportedly burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,\u00a0India Today<\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/span><\/p>\n On Thursday, UP Chief Minister Adityanath had said that there was \u201cno question\u201d of\u00a0\u201ccelebrating\u201d\u00a0Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in India.<\/span><\/p>\n Meanwhile, hundreds of student protestors organised a dharna at the campus gate, the\u00a0Hindustan Times<\/em>\u00a0reported. The daily said that Jinnah\u2019s portrait was briefly taken down from the students union hall in the morning, purportedly to be cleaned, before being put back up.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe portrait will remain there,\u201d AMU Students Union President Mashkoor Ahmad Usmani said. The students union also claimed that Wednesday\u2019s campus violence was a \u201cdeliberate and pre-planned attempt\u201d to attack former Vice President Hamid Ansari, who was at that time not far from the university guest house, PTI reported. \u201cOur protest will continue indefinitely till the police takes action against those who were actually targeting the former vice president,\u201d Usmani said.<\/span><\/p>\n
